R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

During the second half of the 20th century (1950 – 2000) many events occurred. There was the lagging behind and eventual collapse of Soviet Russia plus its satellite states, the counter culture movements of the “hippies,” civil rights, assassinations, drug wars, and a lot more, but the most significant event to emerge from this time is what I refer to as “the golden age of music.” It is no secret that during this time some of the most influential bands of our time came into existence. Queen, the Beatles, the Stones, etc. There was also a ton of solo artists that came out like Marvin Gaye. These artists have had a lasting impact on what is today our music and our culture.

What saddens me as a person who grew up on the great works produced during this era of music is the lack of respect that today’s teenagers show for the artists. They proclaim modern artists as the best around when most modern artists have in one way or another been influenced by bands such as the Beatles and Queen. It seems as if my generation is the last that understands the impact of these artists. Now that’s not to say that there are not youngsters that do not like it, but it appears there are fewer and fewer everyday. Sure, there are some great modern bands that are living up to the expectations of the veterans, but these bands are less common, and this is not only limited to Rock ‘n Roll.

Remember Public Enemy? They were great pop artists, but most “rappers” and “gangsters” of today are just clones of one another. Not much originality. Like I said, there are a few modern bands that are excellent, but they are a rarity.

The main idea behind this post was to let out how I feel people are not valuing what we have. I mean really, how can you not like this?:
